Surfing in Arugam Bay

Surfing is an one of the most favorite things of a tourist in Sri Lanka. Most surfers go to the famous beaches around the country such as Nilaweli, Arugam Bay, Unawatuna, Hikkaduwa, Bentota, Negombo etc.
Most tourists believe that this fishing village in the eastern coast is the best place in Sri Lanka for Surfing. It was not a famous tourist destination in the past but now it is becoming an one, beating other places, mainly because of the beach which tourists visit throughout the year, although the surfing season is from April to September. Once you are there you can rent Boats, surfing boards etc. But in the season it may be somewhat difficult to find a place to settle down as every hotel, guest house and private villas are filled with people. The best practice is to contact a hotel and book a room before some days of your travelling period.
If you are going there by a bus, which takes around 10-12 hours for the trip from Colombo, you should take my advice and make this boring travelling an interesting one. On your way to Arugam Bay you can visit other places such as Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Adam’s Peak etc. So the trip would be more interesting, but you would have to stay at those places. And on the way back you can use the road which takes you through Ampara to Wellawaya then to Hambantota, Tangalle, Matara to Colombo (Via Southern Highway). The reason to choose this path is so simple. On the way back you can visit some more interesting places such as Yala National Park, Kumana Bird Sanctuary, Natural and Historical Beauties at Ampara and if you like you can end your round trip at Mirissa, Koggala, Unawatuna, Galle or Hikkaduwa, as there are lot of things to see.  And also you can stay at Bentota too.

I am hoping to write more articles about some nice places in Sri Lanka.
